4:45 PM ET July 21, 2014. The number of Israel troops killed so far in Operation Protective Edge has reached 25. Seven were killed today. Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel had scored "significant achievements" and its operation in Gaza "would be expanded" despite the heavy losses.
Both Secretary John Kerry and UN leader Ban Ki-Moon are expected to arrive in Cairo on July 22 to discuss ceasefire terms with Egyptian leaders. Egyptian public opinion appears to be on the side of Israel in the current conflict. -- i24News and Jerusalem Post.
12:06 PM ET July 21, 2014. Deputy chief of Hamas' politburo Ismail Haniyeh said today that IDF forces were being defeated by the Palestinian resistance at the Gaza border. Haniyeh said the “Palestinian resistance will meet the demands and expectations of the Palestinian people.” Hamas demands must be met, he said, for any truce to prosper. “Our people’s sacrifices are headed to triumph,” he said. -- Ma'an News
12:05 PM ET July 21, 2014. An IDF investigation revealed that Hamas terrorists who infiltrated Israeli territory via secret tunnels were wearing Israeli helmets and replicas of Israel army uniform. -- Times of Israel.
9:01 AM ET July 21, 2014. A large explosion in a Sudanese ammunition warehouse last Friday was the result of an Israeli attack targeting weapons intended for Hamas, and not a fire, as claimed by the government, an Arab daily reported. -Times of Israel
7:31 AM ET July 21, 2014. Ten Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel early this morning via a terror tunnel, entering between the Erez checkpoint and the community of Nir Am. The group split into two contingents. An IDF observation unit spotted the terrorists and forces were alerted. One contingent was attacked by the IAF and eliminated. The other was met by ground forces. All ten terrorists were killed. An anti-tank rocket was fired at the IDF forces during the fighting. -Tazpit6:
12 AM ET July 21, 2014. Rockets exploded in unoccupied areas near Be'er Tuvia and Ashkelon, while another struck a private residence in Ashdod. No injuries reported. one rocket fell near a private home in Ashdod. Damage was done to the building. No injuries reported in any of the incidents. Police were on scene. -- Jerusalem Post
6:03 AM ET July 21, 2014. Sirens sound in Ashkelon Coast Regional Council and throughout Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Rishon Lezion, and the Shfela region. Explosions heard above Tel Aviv. At least two rockets successfully intercepted. No reports yet of injuries or damage. -- Jerusalem Post.
6:00 AM ET July 21, 2014. Shin Bet and the IDF foiled tunnel infiltration today, having been warned of terrorists' intentions. At least 10 infiltrators killed. Americans serving in Israeli army who were killed in fighting Hamas were identified by the IDF as Nissim Sean Carmeli, 21, of Texas, and Max Steinberg, 24, of California. -- Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel
